Not Exactly My Best Idea Ever...

Isn't this adorable? Yeah, I thought so too. So much so, that I decided to whip up 28 of them for my son's Halloween Party at school. Oh it will be so easy I said, so much cuter than the standard issue cellophane treat bags right? Yeah. Not so much. I saw this in the latest issue of Somerset Life. Tamy Ottomeyer made these as well as the fabulous little magnets inside. I thought I would do them too except that I would fill mine with candy for the party. So....
I pulled out the sewing machine and the miles and miles of orange crepe paper streamers and started sewing to make this little ruffle. Hmmmm...okay, so far so good.

I'll just keep sewing until I have enough for all 28 right?

Yeah, well after almost 2 hours, three semi-severe hot glue gun burns on three different fingers and exactly ONE - yes ONE little basket later - I going back to Wal-Mart to get the ole' standard issue cellophane bags to put the candy in. I'm thinking they're really not so bad after all! I got so frustrated, I didn't even finish embellishing it. I need 28 of these by tomorrow and at this rate, I'll be working well into next week. I think I'll just stick to painting things and decorating - I'm much better at it anyway. Ha Ha! I'll leave the super cute stuff to all of you fabulous artists out there. Have a great day everyone and happy crafting!!
xo,
Kathleen

Dear Kathleen,
Your heart was in the right place.
The end result DID turn out really cute :+)

LOL! I love that you sewed for hours and then threw in the towel. If you had finished them all, you'd probably need to eat all the candy just to get your sanity back.

Oh I've had these "fabulous" ideas before ~ never quite turn out like the picture. Not to mention they fail to inform you that it will take the average human a month to complete such a "quick" project.

Hi Kathleen!

I can't even tell you how many times I attempt that kind of stuff....it's like I get a little idea & then embellish it / martha-ize it and make it so big in my head that it is crazy! It never seems like it could possibly take very long...it did turn out super cute though...but I know sometimes we just need to buy it instead of making it..

You ARE a great mom!!

OH, that gave me a good laugh.

I too was in over my head this week thinking I could make a Madeline costume and Buzz Lightyear papier maché wings -

Thankfully my kids are flexible and bless their hearts were not fazed when I confessed I could not pull it off at the last minute.

Sewing crépe paper? Very impressive!!!!!

"Won't these be fun and won't those little buggers think they're so cool, and won't those other moms be so impressed and won't I be so proud that I just whipped these up???!!!"
Yup, been there too many times to count. Amazing--hope never fails, it just gets wrapped in cellophane...
Kudos to you for your effort!!

Love your sense of humor and the fact that you shared about something not turning out as planned.. Sometimes in blog-land everything looks too perfect. Thanks for the reality check-I can totally relate.

hahaha- something I would do. Hours and hours to make special somethings for school.

When my son ws in 1st grade I made one-of-a-kind magnets for all the kids. I have a vintage card of a deep sea diver child Valentine card. I cut out the center and put in each child's face/head(which I first had to resize--I had asked for the pictures-I was class Mom). I then mlaminated, then magnetized them, and cut them all out(they were not squares- had lots of curves).

What a job.

Yours are great!!!

Hope you can stop by the show this weekend:)/bake sale
