When you find "the perfect" chair at the thrift store but you just don't have the time to completely reupholster it.
Yes, that's what I was thinking when I spotted this chair.
It was $15 and it was perfect.
Well, okay, maybe not perfect, but would you look at those lines?
I knew exactly where I wanted to put it and so it came home with me.
I did reupholster the sides and back with burlap...but I painted the rest of it. Yes, painted it! No sewing, no zippers, no pinning. Just me and my paintbrush, a can of paint, and of course the chair. She was begging me to paint her.
So of course, I obliged.
What do you think of her now?
She's lovely, I think.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen for the frame and chair - Graphite for the stripes.
Clear wax on the whole chair and a bit of dark wax to bring out the wood details.

Gorgeous! I love the burlap on the sides and you would never know it was painted from these pictures. Love the grain sack stripe. You got that perfect! Really nice makeover. : )
Beautiful! I loved that you were able to absolutely transform this chair...and mostly just with paint! I think it is one of the best painted fabric chairs I have seen. Since I don't know how to reupholster, it opens me up to new possibilities. Hope I get lucky and catch a find like you did:)
It came out great. I really like the reupholstery, and the two different treatments. I can see why you couldn't pass it up. I have a few from vintage shops, for the same reason.

Donna Huisinga, to answer your question, the main reason for painting the chair was because I knew that I didn't have the time to reupholster the entire thing (I wanted to complete the job quickly). However, I do love the rustic charm of burlap as well as the contrast of textures and knew that I wanted burlap somewhere on this chair. I decided to paint most of the chair and reupholster the sides and back because I liked the way the burlap looked on those areas in contrast to the painted areas. Plus, burlap would probably have been too scratchy to sit on comfortably and therefore it went on the sides and back :)
